Experiencing Zen Practice from Chinese Incense Ceremony
Actually Zen is one of the school from Mahayana Buddhism which was taken back to Japan by the Master Rong xi in Tian Tai Temple, Chinese called it Ch'an, while they share the similar value of meditation and intuition, and is known by the west, so we use the word here.
About Chinese Incense Culture :

To concentrate the mind and vital energy, soothe the person down or inspire the spirit, ancient Chinese enjoyed the incense with breathing through heating it by wood charcoal berried in the wood ash. |
The ultimate effect was to cultivate of mind, body and spirit totally. It had formed into a decorous ceremony that Chinese ancient literati applied incense appreciation as a guide to the practice of Ch’an mediation since ancient times. It was recorded in “Meng Liang Lu” written by Wu Zi Mu of the Song Dynasty that holding incense parties, making tea, the flowers arrangement and the appraisal of antiques had become four indispensable pleasure in the literati’s life. They would like to share the incense no matter friends gathering, parties themed on Chinese calligraphy, painting or Gu Ch’in, or learning Taoism or Buddhism together.
When it came to Ming dynasty, the incense appreciation immersed into the Confucian School of idealist philosophy presented in the Song and Ming Dynasty as “Sitting Class with the Incense”, or into Buddhism as “Ch’an Practice Class with the Incense". It became so prosperous that Ming literati built a special quite and refined room at home one after another for holding incense parties, or hosting friends to have Ch’an mediation practice, or discussing the lore of ancient literature and calligraphy inspired by the incense appreciation together. While after the middle of Qing Dynasty, the nation’s gate was opened by the artillery and culture of western, and wars followed in succession, thus made “incense parties” which were popular among Chinese upper class from Tang and Song Dynasty, inheriting to Qing dynasty that showed their cultivation and life taste faded gradually.
